Image slides produce extracted visible text and visual analysis—not a pretend “audio transcript.” Video slides may also produce transcription when their media and audio can be accessed.
A carousel has layers. Preserve which layer said what.
The creator’s caption, words printed on slides, objects visible in an image, and speech inside a video slide are different source types. Collapsing them into one block makes errors hard to spot.

Retrieve the slides
Hold That uses the Instagram share and, when supplied, the public post link to retrieve as many slides as the source permits.

The most important carousel field is coverage.
A business carousel in our working library arrived with a lead slide about buying eight “boring businesses” with SBA 7(a) loans. That visible claim became searchable text, while an AI title made the post recognizable without forcing the full caption into the card heading.
In a separate visual-art test, Instagram initially exposed only the lead image. The result explicitly said “Lead image analyzed” and offered a full-slide retry after the public link was supplied. “Slide 1 of 10” and “10 of 10 analyzed” are not interchangeable facts.
When the full carousel is available, the card behaves like one.
Use the previous and next controls, slide dots, arrow keys, or a touch swipe to move through retrieved slides. Image loading is responsive, so a phone does not request the same oversized asset as a desktop. The original Instagram post remains one click away.
Transcript is the wrong word for some carousels.
- Image with typography: exact visible-text extraction plus visual description.
- Photo or artwork: visual analysis, not quoted text the image never contained.
- Video slide: transcript when media access and audio quality permit.
- Post caption: the creator’s separate source text, kept collapsible and attributed.
What to expect, honestly
- A DM share may expose only the lead image. Paste the public post link to request every slide; even then, private or restricted media may remain unavailable.
- OCR can miss stylized fonts, tiny type, low-contrast copy, or text obscured by image compression. Check important wording against the slide itself.
- Visual descriptions are AI interpretations, not creator-authored captions. They can mistake objects, context, or intent.
- Retrieved slides remain connected to the original post and creator when possible. Private analysis does not transfer copyright or permission to reuse the work.
Questions worth answering directly
Can I get a transcript of an Instagram carousel?
For image slides, the useful equivalent is extracted visible text plus visual analysis and the original caption. For video slides, spoken-word transcription may be possible when the media and audio are available. Will Hold That retrieve every carousel slide?
Not always. A normal Instagram message share may expose only the lead image. A public post link gives Hold That another route to attempt the full carousel. Private, deleted, restricted, or differently exposed posts may still return partial coverage.
How do I know whether the full carousel was analyzed?
The library reports slide coverage, such as the number of slides analyzed. When only the lead image is available, the item says so rather than implying the full post was read.
Can I swipe through the carousel in the Hold That library?
Yes, when multiple slide images were retrieved. The card supports previous and next controls, slide dots, keyboard controls, and touch swiping. If only one image was retrieved, those controls are intentionally absent.
Does Hold That download or republish the creator’s carousel?
Hold That stores available media for the sender’s private working library and keeps a link to the original creator when available. That does not grant permission to republish the slides.
